Analysis of fast break's efficiency in handball as an element of sport performance

(Analyse der Effektivität des schnellen Gegenstoß´ im Handball als Element der sportlichen Leistung)

In handball, fast break is the phase of the game in which the team that gains possession of the ball tries to progress rapidly to wards the contrary goal in order to convert. The increasing speed and rhythm of the game during the last years (Roman, 2008), has caused its use and efficiency to be important for a match's final result. The study of the efficiency of the game is fundamental when valorizing tactically a team's performance. In this sense, studies have been realized in handball to quantify the efficiency of the actions of a game in different kinds of competitions, national and international ones. (Gutiérrez, 2003; Rogulj, Srhoj y Srhoj, 2004; Ferreira, 2006; Salesa, 2008; García, Ibáñez, Feu, Cañadas y Parejo , 2008; Sáez, Roldán y Feu, 2009). Some of these studies have centered their attention specifically in the phase of fast break (Gutiérrez, 1999; Prudente, Garganta y Anguera, 2004a; Ferreira , 2006). In first place, in this thesis goes deeper into the fast break matter from a theoretical and conceptual point of view, realizing a profound revision of the varied terminology concerning this phase of the game. The objective has been to elaborate a conceptual framework that allows a scientific study of this subject. Besides, we have gone deeper in the knowledge of factors interacting in fast break's beginning, development and ending. The study is framed into the observational methodology, whose scientific characteristics are widely justified, being very much of use in the sports investigation. In this case, two "ad hoc" instruments have been elaborated to register the corresponding data. On one side, a formulary of fast break's observation and registry attending the contextual situations (time, result, defensive situation, fast break situation) and the efficiency's valuation. On the other side, it was applied a second instrument in which the ball's transport characteristics were recorded. For its evaluation and graphic representation I worked deeply with the Graph Theory. Men's Youth National Championship and competitions related to local teams were analyzed for the previous studies, testing and completing the methodology of this study in the analysis of fast break's efficiency in the Men Elite Pan-American championship 2008. For the reference study, 14 matches corresponding to the King's Cup 2009 and 2010 have been analyzed. Presentation and discussion of results was realized through a descriptive and associative analysis. Besides, the sequential analysis of delay was used to establish the relationship among categories and the different levels of answers studied. As a conclusion, it was verified an increase in the game's rhythm during the last years and it was proved the importance of the defense and its relationship with fast break's development. It was also valued the efficiency of different fast break situations, proving that overcoming retirement's defensive opposition is a key factor; some tendencies in the use of space during fast break's development and ending were also observed..
