The influence of psychological training on the self-regulation and self-control of high performance table tennis players

(Der Einfluss psychologischen Trainings auf die Selbstregulation und Selbststeuerung von Tischtennisspielern des Hochleistungsbereichs)

The factors of psychological training of athletes are researched not sufficiently enough. Many authors underline that psychological training of athletes is a complicated process, without which the enhancement of modern sports is impossible. The problem of the study is that data, which would reveal the influence of psychological training on the self-regulation and self-control of the athletes, is still lacking. Ability to control precompetition states can be characterised by indicators: self-regulation and self-control. The purpose of this study is to establish the influence of psychological training on the self-regulation and self-control of the table tennis players. Objectives: to establish self-regulation level and to evaluate self-control level of athletes. Methods The following research methods have been applied in the study: Milman (1990) and M. Snaider (Raigorodskij, 2000) questionnaires, data has been analysed by means of the mathematical statistics (calculation of means and application of the t test). The experiment was performed with 34 table tennis players, whom we divided in experimental group (16 athletes) and control group (18 athletes). Results By using t test it was established that before the program of psychological preparation the self-regulation of the experimental group and the control group was the same (t=0.48, p>0.05). After comparing the data of the experimental group before and after the program, statistically significant differences were found out (t=2.06, p>0.05): self-regulation of the experimental group improved (Tab. 1). The analysis of results revealed that among athletes of the experimental and control groups before the program of psychological preparation the athletes who distinguished themselves by strong social self-control were dominating. For these athletes it is characteristic that they react flexibly to a changed situation and control well their emotions, therefore, they are better able to seek higher sport results. After the program of psychological preparation in the control group any considerable changes regarding self-control were not noticed. Subject to the application of t test we obtained that before the program of psychological preparation self-control of the tested in the experimental group and the control group was the same (t=0.62, p>0.05). After the program of psychological preparation statistically significant differences were established (t=1.98, p>0.05) in the experimental group (Table 2). Discussion/Conclusion These results demonstrated the influence of psychological training on the self-regulation and self-control of the athletes
