The business of winning

(Siegen als Geschäft)

Beijing Athlete Program is about winning medals. In the lead-up to the Beijing Olympics, Australia must work hard to maintain its outstanding international successes of recent years. The Beijing Athlete Program is aimed at attaining sustained high performance success in targeted sports — those that offer the best potential to win medals — leading into the Beijing Olympics, Paralympics and beyond. The Beijing Athlete Program will oversee the high performance programs of sports identified on the basis of significant investment and potential to achieve multiple medals, or to gain significant benefit from improved Asian linkage in the Beijing cycle. Initially 21 sports were identified for inclusion in the Beijing Athlete Program: * Group 1 (significant ASC investment) — rowing, swimming, hockey, cycling, athletics, basketball, sailing, water polo, soccer, volleyball, gymnastics and canoeing * Group 2 (multi-medal or potential multi-medal) — diving, archery, shooting, triathlon and skiing * Group 3 (increased potential through Asian linkage) — judo, table tennis, badminton and taekwondo. Another three sports — baseball, softball and equestrian — have since been added on the basis of their medal potential. The Beijing Athlete Program will help to achieve sustained high performance success by providing: * a level of quality assurance over the individual sports high performance programs * a strategic overview of the challenges faced by the targeted sports, which helps determine how ASC resources, both financial and services, are allocated. Such challenges might include the budgetary pressures of having to travel internationally to compete, developing future high performance coaches, implementing talent identification programs, and enhancing national leagues and domestic competitions. Under the Beijing Athlete Program, the targeted sports have a management committee with ASC representation. The committees are responsible for: * overseeing the development and preparation of athletes for the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics * identifying and developing athletes and coaches for the longer term (beyond Beijing) * identifying and resolving key issues impacting on the effective delivery of high performance program key performance indicators or outcomes * managing the high performance program to provide a well structured and effective operating environment for coaches, athletes and support staff.
