Forces exerted on the butt plate by the shoulder of the biathlete in biathlon shooting

(Kräfte, die die Schulter des Biathleten beim Biathlon-Schiessen auf die Platte des Gewehrkolbens ausübt)

Performance in physical activity and sport depends of several factors. This performance jointly depends on efficient cognitive, physical and mechanical processes. As regards all sports requiring a technological equipment, mechanical parameters must be taken into account. We have thus studied the interactions existing in biathlon between the biathlete and his rifle. Biathlon is a nordic sport that combines cross-country skiing with rifle marksmanship. In competition, it was reported that standing shooting was significantly affected because skiing exercise decreased the postural control of biathletes (Hoffman et al. 1992, Simoneau et al. 1997) and increased the shooting time (Grebot et al. 2002). Meanwhile, other theories could shed a light on the declining shooting performance and could very well be linked with mechanical factors. Today, however, no manufactured toll can analyse the interaction between biathletes and their rifles while in a position for shooting. Therefore, the aim of this study was to measure the position of the shoulder and the force exerted by the biathlete while shooting in order to determine the reproductibility of the position of the shoulder.
