The pulling force in the water flume during tethered swimming as criteria of swimming skill

(Die Zugkraft beim Schwimmen im Schwimmkanal als Kriterium der Schwimmfertigkeiten)

One of the basic motor abilities for swimmers is the ability to use muscle strength to create high propulsive force in the water. E. Petrov (1977), S. Vaitsekhovsky (1980), M. Saigin (1981) found that high muscle strength developed during land resistance training shows very limited transfer to pulling force in the water and swimming speed. Pulling force during tethered swimming at zero velocity in groups of swimmers of the same age, sex and preparedness demonstrates moderate correlation with swimming results (Petrov, 1977; Vorontsov, 1977; Vaitsekhovsky, 1980; Saigin, 1981). So it becomes necessary to find the characteristics which will show how effectively the swimmer uses its strength during the performance of swimming actions. For this purpose, we studied the possibility of using the water flume for evaluation of specific swimming strength. The questions were… How does value of pulling force change with water flow velocity during tethered swimming in water flume? How closely relates this pulling force to competitive swimming? How do the "pulling force vs flow velocity" relation changes during training?
