Characteristics of upper-limb press and pull power and in Japanese female track-and-field sprinters

(Kennzeichen des Drückens mit den oberen Extremitäten und der Zugkraft japanischer Sprinterinnen in der Leichtathletik)

[Background] In female track-and-field sprinters, upper-limb power, which is required to swing arms, is considered to play an important role to improve sprint performance in addition to lower-limb power. It is also needed to study which has a larger influence on sprint performance, pulling backward or pressing forward of the arms. [Aims] Difference between upper-limb press and pull power is determined in female track-and-field sprinters at different performance levels. [Methods] Subjects were 19 female college track-and-field sprinters (age: 19.8±1.4 years), including 8 who had participated in the Japan Intercollegiate Competition (The national-class sprinters) and 11 who had not (The district-class sprinters). The upper-limb pressing was evaluated by bench press. The upper-limb pulling was evaluated by bench pull. The subjects, lying on the bench in a prone position, raised the barbell upward until the barbell came into contact with the underside of the bench. The power was measured at increasing weight loads of every 5 kg with the measurement equipment of the Linear Position Transducer method. [Results] The press power was significantly higher in the national-class sprinters than in the district-class sprinters at 10, 15, 20, 30 and 35 kg. No difference was observed in the pull power between the two sprinters at any weight loads. [Conclusions] In the female track-and-field sprinters with higher performance levels, upper-limb press power, not the pull power, was found to be higher.
