In this paper, we ask whether the Norwegian sports model is out of step with the times and find that the answer is ´yes` as a result of the outdated way sport and politics are considered. There is a cultural narrative about ?The Norwegian Model` that precludes growing trends and changes in the population`s participation in exercise and sport. The Norwegian sports model assumes that sport is for all; sport promotes good health and top-level sport motivates the population to be active. The model contains specific forms of collaboration and financing which both stimulate and restrict the agent`s freedom of action. Research shows another picture; a mismatch between ideals and realities - a model out of step with the times. In asking how suitable the Norwegian sports model is for the future, we find that if political goals and visions are to be realized satisfactorily, other forms of cooperation and financial support schemes are needed, and a new cultural narrative about sports in Norway has to be developed on the basis of new understandings of how politicians think.
