Effect of an extrinsic motivator on mechanical parameters of the counter movement jump used in team sports

(Auswirkung eines extrinsischen Motivators und mechanischer Parameter auf in Mannschaftssportarten genutzten reaktiven Sprüngen)

Purpose: The first objective of this study was to determine the level of the strength-speed preparation that is needed for young female and male team sports players. The second aim was to examine the effects of an extrinsic motivator, such as an overhead goal, on vertical jump performance.Basic procedures: This study was designed to show the effects of a suspended crossbar put directly above the athlete on the performance and biomechanical parameters of the vertical jump. In the present study, 116 voluntary participants took part. All were healthy male (M) and female (F) athletes (M: mean age 15.1 ± 0.5 years; mean height 183.8 ± 4.1 cm; mean body mass 69.4 ± 3.3kg; F: mean age 14.1 ± 0.7 years; mean height 171.1 ± 2.9 cm; mean body mass 59.1 ± 1.7 kg) competing in 3 different team sports (basketball, handball and volleyball), and volunteered to participate in the present study. Players performed tests that consisted of five single modified "maximal" vertical jumps (with hands behind the back). In the subsequent set of five vertical jumps, the task of the athletes was to touch a suspended overhead crossbar. The suspended crossbar was placed directly above the athlete as an overhead goal. The bar was adjusted to the athlete`s previously determined maximal jump height. To determine the level of the strength-speed preparation in male and female players, the Kistler 9182C piezoelectric force plate with software was used.Main findings: Players of each team sports performed the vertical jump differently with the overhead goal. A significant goal × discipline interaction was found for jump height (p < 0.001), and peak power (p = 0.041), and mean power (p = 0.007), and relative squat depth (p < 0.001), and time of the takeoff phase (p < 0.001). Conclusions: This research indicates how important mental preparation is for the players.
