Guidelines for resistance training for Australian Rules Football

(Richtlinien für das Krafttraining in der australischen Variante des Footballs)

The purpose of this review is to provide strength and condition coaches of all levels with current and up to date guidelines for resistance training for Australian rules football. It also aims to outline how to maximize athletic development from a resistance training perspective. Resistance training is a commonly used form of training amongst Australian rules football, other sports and the wider community. Resistance training is undertaken with the purpose of enhancing performance, assisting with rehabilitation and help prevent injuries. Through reviews of original research, strength and conditioning books, physiology books and Australian rules football specific publications this article highlights the physical demands of Australian rules football and specifically the intervention of resistance training and its advantages to the athletes. Since there is a greater emphasis on strength and power, due to an increase in the speed of the game, resistance training has become more important to strength and conditioning coaches and the athletes. It is important that the strength and conditioning coach understands the requirements, constraints and practicality of training these fitness components for athletes who compete in Australian rules football. Through utilising a periodised annual plan the strength and conditioning coach can aid their athletes in achieving the standard of 1.5 X body weight for upper body push, bench press, and upper body pull, bench pull or pull up, movements and 2 X body weight for lower body, squat, movements. In conclusion this review identifies six key areas to help build the guidelines for resistance training for Australian rules footballers: 1) Physical Demands 2) Resistance Training 3) Safety 4) Assessment 5) Periodisation 6) Programming for Hypertrophy, Strength and Power.
