Movement competency assessment in softball - The basis for talent identification

(Bewertung der Bewegungskompetenz im Softball - Die Grundlage der Talentidentifikation)

Talent identification in sport has been recognized by the Australian Sports Commission (2) as a priority for future development and growth of Australian sport. It has been identified that Australian sporting performances are declining in relation to our international counterparts. This paper presents a model that may be used by associations such as Softball New South Wales as part of talent identification. The model forms the primary component of determining physical literacy of developing athletes. The sport of softball has had an extremely impressive record internationally over the past 15 years however the sport is now facing many challenges. With declining membership numbers and a reduction in funding primarily due to the profile of the sport and its removal from the Olympic Games, the sport needs to set processes that ensure long term athlete development. The Movement Competency Assessment (MCA) as presented in this paper can be administered and monitored by the Strength and Conditioning coach. The MCA has the potential to become the corner stone of long term athlete development in softball.
